Fayetteville, NORTH CAROLINA
(sources: Wikipedia; Fayetteville website)

The original settlers of Fayetteville were from Scotland.  They arrived in 1739 and established a significant transportation link on the Cape Fear river.  Their influence is still seen widely today.  In 1783, the settlements of Campbellton and Cross Creek merged and were named Fayetteville after General LaFayette, the French General who served in the Revolutionary Army.  The state legislature met in the city after the Revolutionary War and it was in Fayetteville that North Carolina ratified the Constitution.  Fayetteville has a rich history from that period and from the Civil War period also.  The Arsenal, a local historical site was burned by Sherman during his march, and the Market House still stands as a reminder of Fayetteville's participation in slavery.
